Section A: Historical Context
You must choose one of two historical periods. Understanding the social, cultural, and literary context of your chosen period is essential for AO3.

1880–1910: Late Victorian & Edwardian
Industrial peak, imperial expansion, rigid class structures, moral codes, gradual social change, and the “long peace” before WWI.

1918–1939: The Interwar Period
Post-war trauma, rapid social change, economic instability, cultural experimentation (Modernism, Jazz Age), political extremism.

Component 3, Section A: Unseen Prose
Component 3 is a written examination testing your ability to analyse previously unseen texts. Section A focuses on unseen prose from one of two prescribed historical periods.

You choose ONE question. Each provides an unseen prose passage (~400–600 words), supporting contextual extracts, supporting critical extracts, and one question asking you to analyse the passage.
Assessment Objective Weighting
AO1 and AO2 carry equal highest weighting — you must analyse closely HOW meanings are shaped while writing clearly and using terminology accurately.
